Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of short-term grape seed extract (GSE)
supplementation on malondialdehyde (MDA) and serum total creatine kinase(CK) responses
after an aerobic exercise in men. Twenty-two men (age: 19±1 years, BF: 12±3%,
BMI 22±2, and VO2max 39±2 ml.kg-1.min-1) were randomized in a double-blind manner
to either a grape seed extract supplement (n =10; 200 GSE mg/day) or a placebo (n =12;
200 PLA mg/day) for 14 days. After supplementation period, all subjects were participated
in aerobic exercise protocol with 75% VO2max on the treadmill for 30 minutes. Blood
samples were obtained prior (baseline), after fourteen day supplementation (before exercise),
and immediately after the exercise protocol. Data were analyzed by analysis of
variance (ANOVA) with repeated measure and Bonferroni as appropriate using SPSS15
at P<0.05. The results showed that, after exercise, there were no significant differences
between groups in TAC levels (P>0.05). However, the MDA and CK were less than in
PLA group after exercise in GSE group (P<0.05). It can conclude that two weeks of GSE
supplementation could attenuate exercise-induced oxidative stress.
